Rainy Day Pick-Me-Ups
Vol. 2 No. 2

Do good while sipping well

Show some love to the world, while you take care of your taste buds -- and warm up in chilly weather.

Thanksgiving Coffee Company
Recently, Ben Corey-Moran of Thanksgiving Coffee returned from working with the coffee farmers of the Peace Kawomera Cooperative in Uganda and the Dakunde Kawa Cooperative in Rwanda. On Thanksgiving Coffees website, read Bens series on the companys partnership with the Ugandan farmers and life in their remarkable coffee growing community, including topics ranging from fair trade to culture, farming to family life.

Teeccino
Committed to encouraging sustainable rain forest products, Caroline MacDougall, developed a caffeine-free beverage using roasted ramon nuts from Central America. These 120-foot trees are vital to the health of the forest beneath them. Our effort gives the standing trees economic worth in order to preserve the forest.

Numi Organic Tea
Numi teas and caffeine-free teasans are made with organic full leaf teas, fresh pure herbs and real fruits, without oils or flavorings, and are packaged using recyclable and biodegradable materials and gift boxes made from sustainably-grown bamboo. A Numi innovation is its hand-sewn and handcrafted "Flowering Teas (below).

Live Gourmet butter lettuce (above) and watercress from Hollandia Produce are harvested with their roots intact they are still alive, staying fresh and flavorful. Make a dressing with olive oil, a fruity vinegar, minced shallot, mustard, and a touch of whipping cream.

Napa Valley Mustard Festival

The vineyards of Northern California are turning bright yellow as the lines of mustard plants that separate the rows of vines come into bloom. The contrast with the black shapes of the leafless grape vines, is very beautiful, even on a cloudy day.

The Napa Valley celebrates this annual winter decoration with the Mustard Festival at COPIA, the American Center for Wine Food and the Arts in the town of Napa on March 17 and 18.

Savor California will be participating once again and offering the opportunity to taste and purchase products from these companies:

Bellindora Vinegars
Shelley's Biscotti (below)
Vignette Wine Country Soda

Olive oils: terroir and talent

Olive oils, like wines, reflect both their origins and the craftsmanship of their makers. On the pages of Savor California, you can find a library of olive oils from all over the state:

Skipstone Ranch from the shoulders of the Mayacamas Range in Sonoma County.
McEvoy Ranch from the hills of Northern Marin County.
Stella Cadente Olive Oil from Mendocino County.
